           05/02/08 Berlin A burst of activities launches 2008!  A new, exciting year has begun, and we are rapidly approaching the 2010 Football World Cup in South Africa. We will be using 2008 to continue building a strong bridge between Germany and South Africa in order to provide assistance where it is needed, namely outside the major South African stadiums. To achieve our goal, we're working on a series of activities in 2008, of which we'd like to present just a short selection here...We will be celebrating our selection as a "2008 Place of Ideas" by holding an art opening on 7 April 2008. To benefit *stars of tomorrow, established photographers and video artists will be displaying their work and in the process raising public awareness of the problems faced by children in South Africa. In addition to further publicizing our project as part of the "Deutschland – Land der Ideen" (Germany – Land of Ideas) site campaign, we would like to use this event to reunite our old, new, and also future partners and friends, and to celebrate with them. So mark this date in your calendar! In addition to this "Idea Day", we are already working full steam ahead on our second major event of 2008, which will estimated take place in the fall – an auction of works by high-caliber South African artists to benefit the development projects of *stars of tomorrow. Further activities are covered in our newsletter, which we will continue to send you quarterly as usual. And something else: Thanks to new legislation in Germany intended to enhance community involvement ("Gesetz zur weiteren Stärkung des bürgerschaftlichen Engagements") which was passed with retroactive validity as of 1 January 2007, taxpayers can now deduct charity donations amounting to 20% of their wages and salaries. This marks quite a jump from the previous figure of only 5%. For donors, therefore, the new year has gotten off to a brilliant start! With best wishes from the *stars of tomorrow team |
