The 19th FIFA Football World Cup 2010™ will be held in South Africa – and thus for the first time on African soil. This decision was announced by the FIFA Executive Committee in Zurich on 15 May 2004.
In the wake of South Africa‘s disappointment at not being named the host of the 2006 World Cup, FIFA decided to introduce a rotation principle in order to achieve equitable representation among all the world‘s continents. For the 2010 World Cup, FIFA started by only accepting applications from African countries.
South Africa could achieve its aim already in the first ballot with 14 to 10 votes.
